Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, stated that the outcome of the recently concluded United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 24) would have a positive impact on Nigeria as a whole and Benue State in particular.
The Governor made this statement earlier today while speaking with the press at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport upon his return from New York, where he was part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s delegation to the UNGA.
He noted that several issues affecting global development, particularly on the African continent, were discussed by world leaders during the meeting.
He explained that he also held additional bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the UNGA, focusing on the progress achieved by the Sustainable Development Goals programs in the state and how to ensure their lasting impact.
He expressed optimism that UNGA 24 holds great potential, assuring that he would pursue opportunities to bring its benefits to the people of Benue.
He disclosed that meetings were also held with representatives of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), where he called for extended interventions to support internally displaced persons (IDPs) and greater collaboration to find lasting solutions to the security crises in parts of the state, including Apa, Agatu, Guma, Gwer-West, Logo, and Kwande.
According to the Governor, the meeting helped UNGA leaders understand the position of sub-nationals in Nigeria, their challenges, and the necessity of partnering with multinational organizations to improve the fortunes of their respective states.
